Yoga Nidra—known as yogic sleep—is a meditation and conscious relaxation practice that is intended to induce total physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. Yoga nidra is a complete relaxation of the body while the mind stays awake, leading the practitioner to a state of consciousness between sleep and awakeness. With verbal guidance, the body becomes increasingly more aware, yet simultaneously relaxed. This practice consists largely of guided body awareness, guided breath awareness and following of verbal instruction to withdraw the senses just enough to move into deeper state of consciousness. It has been said that an hour of yoga nidra can be as restorative as four hours of regular sleep.
Aside from being relaxing, restorative and restful, studies have shown that yoga nidra can also: Ease insomnia Decrease anxiety Alleviate stress Reduce PTSD, chronic pain and chemical dependency Heighten awareness and focus Transform negative habits, behaviors and ways of thinking Foster feelings of peace, calm, and clarity
You will be on your back on your mat for the whole practice so please be sure to bring anything you need to be comfortable (ie: blankets, pillows, bolsters, etc.)
